Single-Phase Electronic Reclosers VXE and NOVA¹
Kyle® Type VXE and NOVA1 reclosers are self-contained, single-phase, current interrupting devices. No external transformers, fuses, arresters, and wiring are required to install the reclosers. This saves significant initial and installation costs. Type VXE and NOVA1 reclosers protect distribution systems to 29.2 kV.
Type VXE or NOVA1 reclosers consist of a recloser with an electronic recloser control connected via a control cable. The control cabinet is designed to be mounted to the recloser tank to lower the installation costs, but can be mounted to the pole or other mounting structure at a distance equal to the cable length. The control cable is attached to the control and recloser with threaded, separable weatherproof connectors.
The recloser and control are an integrated system as control power is supplied by the sensing CT located in the recloser. A minimum of 5 amperes of primary current is sufficient to power the sensing circuits and charge the trip capacitors to actuate the low-energy tripping actuator. If 5 amperes is not available, a small lithium battery is used to assure proper TCC tripping performance without any arming time. System coordination is not sacrificed waiting for capacitors to charge on a fault current. Closing power is provided by a solenoid (VXE) or a lithium battery (NOVA1).
The NOVA1 and VXE recloser systems successfully combine four technologies:
- Cycloaliphatic-epoxy encapsulation (NOVA1only)
- High-performance Kyle vacuum interrupter
- Dependable low power mechanisms
- Electronic and automated controls
The solid polymer insulation system does not rely on a gaseous or liquid dielectric. The NOVA1 recloser is highly resistant to ozone, oxygen, moisture, contamination, and ultraviolet light. The NOVA1 has an exceptional ability to resist electrical tracking.
The VXE maintains the proven oil insulation system, providing lower initial costs.
NOVA1 and VXE reclosers use patented axial-magnetic vacuum interrupters. Slots are machined into the contact support structure producing a magnetic field along the axis of the interrupter. This axial-magnetic field keeps the arc in an easier-to-interrupt diffuse mode, resulting in less power in the arc that needs to be dissipated, resulting in far less contact erosion.
Both the NOVA1 and VXE use self-contained mechanisms to lower installation costs. The NOVA1 uses a low power dual coil magnetic actuator to provide reliable trip and close operations from a lithium primary battery in the NOVA1 control. The VXE uses a high voltage closing coil (optional low voltage closing) to provide closing power. Both designs include simple operating levers for manual opening, closing, and non-reclosing. Manual tripping and closing is accomplished independent of the battery health assuring dependable operation under emergency conditions.
The trip free, yellow manual operating handle permits manual opening and closing of an energized recloser. The manual operating handle is designed to be operated with a hotstick.
The non-reclosing lever provides the recloser with the capability tripping one trip operation to lockout, regardless of the operations to lockout setting inside the control. The non-reclosing lever is designed for operation with a hotstick.
The 360° lockout indicator is viewable from all directions. Extending below the cabinet, linemen can easily identify the status of the control lockout target.
Electronic control circuitry is centralized on a single printed circuit board. Programming is accomplished in minutes with easy-to-use DIP switches. Programmable control parameters, along with easily replaceable TCC cards, provide immediate overcurrent protection with flexible TCC modifiers. The control can be equipped with an optional SCADA input/output board to provide remote operation and status functions for SCADA applications.
