The Loadbreak Feedthru Insert
That's Taken a Turn for the Better
No More Broken Bushing Well Studs!
No More Loose Connections!
Bulletin 91038 (November 1991)
You don't have to worry any more about installing feedthru
inserts into your padmount gear. Cooper Power Systems has made installation easy and
trouble free. We have re-designed our feedthru inserts with your concerns in mind. Our new
design eliminates the problems heard most when talking to your line personnel.
"We keep breaking bushing well studs when
tightening feedthru inserts."
"We can never tell when the device is properly
seated in the bushing well and worry about loose connections."
"We are concerned that mechanical wear from
repeated installations will degrade the load current carrying capability."

Eliminate Broken Bushing Well Studs
We have incorporated a patented (U.S. Patent No. 5.041.004), ratchet style base and cam
stem internal to the "rotatable" feedthru inserts (see cutaway detail).
When the feedthru insert is installed, this ratchet base is
torque actuated to release when the cam stem bottoms on the shoulder of the mating bushing
well stud. The ratchet is calibrated to release at between 7 and 14 foot-pounds. This
torque range is well below the break point of a bushing well stud, but proven to provide
an electrical connection for full for full 200 amp current loading (verified from tests in
accordance with ANSI/IEEE 386).

Eliminate Loose Connections
Once the correct installation torque has been achieved and the ratchet device releases, an
audible clicking of the ratchet device indicates to the installer that proper seating has
been accomplished. The ratchet device provides 10° incremental positioning in the
clockwise direction. A stainless steel bracket is provided to fix the device in the
desired position. Final positioning can be accomplished with continued clockwise rotation
without compromising the connection made during initial installation. Other feedthru
inserts may require counterclockwise positioning that invites the opportunity for a loose
connection. Our rotatable feedthru inserts take the worry out!

All copper (copper alloy)
current path meets the most
stringent current carrying
test, thus eliminating load
capability concerns

Eliminate Load Capability Concerns
The new RTE Rotatable Feedthru Inserts employ the time proven all copper alloy current
path. (No aluminum current carrying components are used.) Unlike other feedthru devices,
the mechanism that alls rotational positioning is not part of the primary current
interchange. Therefore, mechanical wear from repeated installations will not degrade the
current load capability of the device.
The most stringent current carrying test recognized in the
industry today is the current cycling test, the "Accelerated Thermal Test",
defined in the latest draft of ANSI/IEEE 386. Our feedthru inserts have successfully
passed this test, and thus eliminate load capability worries.
