Capacitor Bank Protection

As you would expect from the leading supplier of high voltage capacitors, Cooper offers an unexcelled range of capacitor bank protection relays. Most protection schemes are in the form of add-in software modules for the iDP-210-7 or iXP-420-5 relays, members of the Edison® Idea™ line of relays. These modules use the Idea Workbench™ feature of the Idea platform whereby new functions and features may be uploaded to standard relays, thereby reducing the number of models to manage.

Custom Capacitor Bank Protection Schemes

The Idea Workbench feature also permits Cooper to develop unique capacitor bank protection and control schemes specific to your unique requirements. For more information on a custom protection scheme, contact your local Cooper Power Systems representative or e-mail us.

Edison IM30CE Capacitor Bank Relay

The IM30CE is a neutral current unbalance relay ideal for the protection of double wye connected and grounded wye capacitor banks equipped with neutral CTs.

The IM30CE offers inherent bank unbalance compensation, two levels of unbalance detection, capacitor bank reclosing time delay logic, and three-phase and ground overcurrent protection. In addition, a separate low set RMS sensing phase overcurrent element is provided for.

iCP-440 Capacitor Bank Protection Relay

The iCP-440 capacitor bank protection relay is a full-featured Edison® IdeaTM relay suitable for shunt capacitor or filter bank protection and automatic voltage control applications. The relay is ideally suited for new or retrofit applications of fuseless or internal/externally fused banks requiring neutral unbalance protection. It utilizes voltage or current neutral unbalance to provide flexible protection for both grounded and ungrounded banks. Single or double wye bank configurations may be accommodated. The relay easily permits nulling of inherent bank unbalance and compensates for real time system unbalances (single wye) thus permitting maximum sensitivity for detection of internal problems. The relay detects capacitor unit failure when the compensated neutral quantity increases beyond a threshold. The neutral unbalance algorithms permit secure and economical protection on banks of various var ratings. The iCP-440 also provides advanced power quality, metering, communication, and PLC functions.

iCP-630 Capacitor Bank Protection Relay

The iCP-630 capacitor bank protection relay is a full-featured Edison® IdeaTM relay suitable for ungrounded shunt capacitor or filter bank protection and automatic voltage control applications for both externally fused and fuseless capacitor units. Reduce bank procurement, installation and maintenance costs by eliminating the need for the voltage transformer connected from the neutral to ground. Single or double wye bank configurations are accommodated. The relay easily permits nulling of inherent bank unbalance and compensates for system unbalance thus permitting maximum sensitivity to detection of internal problems. The relay detects capacitor unit failure when the compensated negative sequence quantity increases beyond a threshold. The unbalance algorithm permits secure and economical protection on banks of various var ratings. The iCP-630 also provides advanced power quality, metering, communication and PLC functions.

iCP-640 Capacitor Bank Protection Relay

The iCP-640 capacitor bank protection relay is a full-featured Edison® IdeaTM relay suitable for fuseless, internal or externally fused shunt capacitor or filter bank protection and automatic voltage control applications. The relay is ideally suited for new or retrofit applications where highly sensitive capacitor unbalance detection based on voltage differential or impedance is required. The relay easily permits nulling of inherent bank unbalance thus permitting maximum sensitivity to detection of internal problems. The relay detects capacitor unit failure when the compensated voltage differential or impedance change quantity increases beyond a threshold. The unbalance algorithms permit secure and economical protection on banks of various var ratings. The iCP-640 also provides advanced power quality, metering, communication and PLC functions.

iCP-191 Fuseless Capacitor Bank Protection Relay

The iCP-191 fuseless capacitor bank protection relay is a full-featured Edison® IdeaTM relay suitable for multi-string, fuseless, grounded shunt capacitor or filter bank protection and control applications. The relay calculates the apparent impedance of each string and determines capacitor unit failure when the impedance changes beyond a threshold. Protection on a per-string basis permits enhanced sensitivity and rapid identification of capacitor problems to the effected string. Protection on a per-string basis permits greater bank availability: set protective levels relative to actual string capacitor overvoltages instead of cumulative effects measured at the neutral, or internal tap, due to capacitor shorted sections distributed over several strings. The bank remains in service with multiple shorted series sections in various strings until the capacitor unit overvoltage is exceeded. This greater Mvar availability could be critical during a system-wide disturbance. The iCP-191 also provides advanced power quality, metering, communication and PLC functions.

iDP-210-7 Relay with MSCDN Cap Scheme Idea Workbench

The MSCDN Cap Scheme for the iDP-210 relay is designed specifically for the protection of so-called MSCDN, or "Manually Switched Capacitor - Damped Network" banks. The scheme provides both 3-phase unbalance protection using intermediate point tap the MSCDN's main capacitor section (C1), and triple-wye protection for the tuning capacitor section (C2).

This scheme must be used with an iDP-210 relay equipped with the six voltage input option.

iXP-420-5 Relay with Triple Wye Cap Scheme Idea Workbench

The Triple Wye Cap Scheme for the iXP-420 provides sensitive unbalance protection for capacitor banks requiring three "double wye" type of connections, one per phase. This scheme can also be used in filter banks to protect the main and tuning capacitor sections individually. This requirement is found in so-called H-connected banks, and in large fuseless banks where the neutral end of each phase is split in two, each branch passing through a CT, with the output of the two CTs connected differentially. This mimics the connection found in "double wye" capacitor banks.

The relay provides three independent sets of unbalance alarm and trip complete with inherent unbalance compensation for each set.

Additional features include phase and ground overcurrent, bus overvoltage, bank re-energization logic, fuse fail (27FF) and breaker fail protection.

This scheme may be used with externally fused, fuseless, or internally fused capacitors.

This scheme may be used with any iXP-420 relay.
