Cooper Has A New Idea In Protective Relaying

With the Edison® idea™ relay platform, Cooper has advanced the state-of-the-art in integrating control and protection.

Available now in Feeder and Line Distance relay versions, the Idea relay incorporates the most sophisticated software expandability of any relay available. Its unique Idea Workbench™ feature allows the relay's functionality to be expanded by adding downloading software modules. These modules can be created by the end user, third party developers, or from Cooper. Imagine the ability to upgrade the functionality of your protection and control system with out the need to update your relay's firmware. This also reduces the need to stock multiple versions of a given relay depending upon a specific field application.

In addition to offering a full suite of protective elements in each relay, the idea incorporates extensive front panel targeting to allow for fast and efficient visual determination of the relay’s status, fault type, control modes, etc. The idea also features eight front panel hot keys which permit the user to immediately access selected display screens, view metering, access settings, implement control functions, or even to perform local operations. Although the function of each hot key is predefined for each Edison idea , these definitions may be changed by the user to meet application specific requirements.

Monitoring Features

More than just protective relays, the Edison idea iTP and iDP provide vital monitoring and measurement of both continuous and operations-related parameters. Exact capabilities depend on the scheme file selected, and may include some or all of the following monitoring functions:

  • Cooper’s exclusive ICSF (Incipient Cable Splice Failure) Detection System for underground cable predicts water induced cable splice failures before they occur.
  • High-Accuracy metering of Amps, Volts, Watts, Vars, and a variety of other quantities
  • Distance-To-Fault calculation
  • Breaker health monitoring including slow/stuck breaker and I2t
  • Interactive Oscillography
  • Relay Replay
  • Sequence of Events Recording

Incorporating the only true graphical programming language in the protective relay field, the Edison idea allows control logic of almost any level of complexity to be easily developed, tested, and downloaded.
