Type S Controls
The Kyle® Type S control is designed for use primarily with Kyle Type VR, VLR, VRV, and TSC three-phase, load-break switches in automatic load transfer schemes. Upon special application, the S control can operate electronic reclosers to provide fault-interrupting capability to the load transfer scheme. PST-6 and PST-9 pad-mounted switchgear units also include a Type S control for operation during loss-of-voltage conditions.
The S control is a time-proven, user-friendly control that provides the timing and control logic required to perform the automatic source transfer. Simple relay logic and analog timers assure reliable operation, ease of installation, and quick troubleshooting. The front panel of the control provides visual indication of the status of each switch, control settings, and local operation capabilities. The S control can be programmed via the front panel, without the use of a computer.
The Type S load-transfer control, operating two three-phase switches, provides a reliable and economical means for accomplishing an automatic load transfer. In a typical scheme, service to a critical load is normally supplied from a preferred source. It is automatically switched to an alternate, standby source if the preferred source voltage is lost for any reason for a preset period of time. Upon restoration of the preferred source voltage, the load is automatically switched back to the preferred source, again after a pre-determined time delay. The Type S load transfer includes restoration for parallel or non-parallel return for users to select based upon circuit feeder characteristics.
The S control operates during loss-of-voltage conditions for PST-6 and PST-9 pad-mounted switchgear. The control monitors the source line voltages and provides the timing and control logic required to perform the automatic load transfer in the event of a voltage loss. The control commands the operations of the two CI vacuum interrupter switches during auto transfer. Manually operated levers enable manual trip and close of source-side CI interrupter switches during power outages.
Operational power (120 Vac) for the transfer control and vacuum switches is derived from system line levels via internally mounted potential transformers. No external source of power is required.
The S control requires 120 Vac, 50/60 Hz, 500 VA to operate the transfer switches. Quiescent power dissipation at 120 Vac is 18 watts.
