Three-Phase Capacitor Switches
TSC

The Kyle® Type TSC switch is a three-phase, oil-filled device designed specifically for capacitor bank switching applications on distribution systems rated up to 34.5 kV. With a capacitive current switching rating of 135 amps and momentary and latching ratings of 12,000 asymmetrical amps, the TSC can switch single-bank capacitors rated up to 6000 kVAR. The switch also has a maximum inductive continuous and load switching rating of 300 amps at 75% to 100% lagging power factor.

The TSC switch is equipped with a simple, fast-response mechanism that simultaneously operates double-break rotary contacts on all three phases. The fast rotary action of the shaft provides contact opening and contact closing times of about five-eighths of one cycle. The operating springs are preloaded by an electric motor and reduction gear train drive through the point of release to provide this fast rotary action. Total operating time for the motor to load and release the springs for either a close or open operation is a maximum of 15 seconds. A solenoid-operated clutch engages the motor drive to the operating mechanism of the switch when the motor is energized during a remote electrical operating sequence. The clutch is disengaged when the motor circuit is de-energized to provide the switch with local manual operating capability.

The TSC switch is electrically opened and closed by means of customer-supplied 120 Vac 50/60 Hz auxiliary power controlled by a SPDT switching device.

The switch can be manually opened and closed via the red operating lever located under the sleet hood at the front of the switch. A contact position indicator shows the switch position. When the operating lever is pulled down, a manual reset lever is engaged and pulled down with it. In the down position the manual reset lever disables the drive motor circuit to provide local manual override. When released, the operating lever automatically returns to its up position under the sleet hood. The manual reset lever stays down and must be returned to its up position to re-arm the motor circuit and return the switch operation to remote electrical control.

A factory-installed accessory enables the TSC switch to be used in load transfer schemes with the Type S load transfer control.
