Surge Arresters

Cooper Power Systems offers the largest, most economical selection for low voltage, distribution, riser pole, intermediate, and station surge arresters for overhead and underground applications in the industry.

Elbow Arrester

Cooper Power Systems proven POSI-BREAK design has expanded from protection of loadbreak separable connector systems to the arrester market. Cooper Power Systems has designed an elbow arrester, the POSI-BREAK elbow arrester, which increases reliability while protecting your operators. POSI-BREAK elbow arresters address the partial vacuum flashover that occurs when an elbow or cap is separated from an energized bushing. Our POSI-BREAK elbow arrester offers improved dielectric strength and minimizes susceptibility to partial vacuum flashovers while increased tolerance to contamination and high altitude increases its reliability.

VariGAP® Design Technology

Would you like to extend the life of your underground cable beyond what you thought possible?

Do you have old or sensitive cable that needs extra protection from voltage stresses to lengthen its service life?

Would you like to know how you can extend the life of your transformers by simply choosing a different arrester?

Do you have ungrounded sections on your distribution system that are problematic for arresters?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, CPS's VariGAP® distribution arresters are for you. VariGAP arresters offer unbeatable equipment protection and arrester reliability. With up to 30% lower discharge voltages compared to equally rated gap-less MOV arresters, equipment life can be extended due to the reduced stresses placed upon them. VariGAP arresters can survive much higher magnitude and longer temporary overvoltages (TOV's) than equally rated gap-less MOV arresters. As such, areas prone to high voltage rises (undergrounded systems in particular) can be reliably protected with VariGAP arresters. With its supreme TOV withstandability, VariGAP arresters are the most reliable arrester on the market today.

Other Arrester Classes and Designs

VariGAP (gapped MOV) and VariSTAR® (gap-less MOV) designs are available for overhead distribution system protection in both porcelain or silicone rubber housings. For underground distribution application needs, Cooper Power Systems offers both VariGAP and standard gap-less MOV elbow and parking stand arresters.

CPS has a large line of low voltage arresters for a wide range of application needs from transformer secondary to home or business service entrances to inside the home. Other low voltage products protect lighting, motors, irrigation wells, traffic lights, railroad crossing gates, and any other number of low voltage applications.

CPS also offers a full line of Intermediate and Station Class arresters in either silicone rubber or porcelain housings.

MOV Technology

Cooper Power Systems has been manufacturing its own line of MOV disks for over two decades. We are recognized as an industry leader in the development and production of these highly engineered ceramics.

Making our own MOV disks allows us to closely monitor production and eliminate any unsatisfactorily performing product before it ever gets into an arrester. This also allows us to experiment to find ways to make an extremely good product even better. Continual quality improvement is a driving force within Cooper Power Systems and, as such, our ceramics engineers do look to improve the overall quality and durability of our MOV disks.

To further understand these MOV disks as sophisticated electronic devices, we invite you to read this article that was printed in INMR Quarterly Review, Issue 64, Quarter Two, 2004. This article elaborates on the specific elements in regard to design and manufacture of MOV disks which will determine arrester performance. Click here to view article.
